Understanding Dental Office Tools

By Mark Matherson

Another almost universally used dentists' tool is the x-ray machine. The standard version will have the patient stand in place and bite down on a structure which helps to center the head. The scanner will then come down and pan around the patient's head taking the necessary x-rays. There are numerous types of x-rays that are used to discover the root of the problem. Make sure you are spending your money wisely by getting the right type done.

One of the tools most commonly associated with dentists, and perhaps the most feared, is the dental drill. This small device looks rather unassuming at first glance but it is actually a very complex piece of equipment that consists of a hand piece and a bur, which is the name of the attachment. There are a variety of burs for different situations such as filling cavities, removing tooth tissue and repairing chips just to name a few. These devices can also come in handy when patients such as small children have trouble keeping their mouth open or tongue out of the way.

One of the most common tools in dentistry that has changed very little over the years are the various picks and probes that dentists use to examine a patient's mouth. These metal devices are typically about the size of a pen or pencil and have a sharp hook like structure on the end. Some times known as a "contra-angle" probe, these devices can preform a variety of functions from searching for pits and crevices to scraping plaque and buildup off of teeth during a cleaning.

It is also worth mentioning that dentists also use a variety of computers and software these days to help with their dental work. In addition to being able to work in conjunction with a camera to view the inside of a patient's mouth more easily as mentioned earlier this sort of equipment can also preform other actions such as rendering 3D models of tooth and bone structure and help in detecting bone loss from diseases such as gingivitis.

I addition to this dentists also use other software designed for office tasks such as record keeping, procedure planning and more. Another prominently used dentists' tool that shouldn't be overlooked is the dental chair itself. In some cases it can be difficult to maneuver inside a person's mouth, especially if the dentist is preforming a complex procedure and it is necessary to use tools such as a mouth prop, cheek retractor, tongue retractor and lip retractor.
