Dentist that specializes in all dental treatment of kids from infancy to adulthood are Pediatric Dentists. Aspiring Pediatric Dentists must first earn a bachelor's degree and then graduate from a dental school that's been accredited by the ADA. Applicants will need to complete any required pre-dental course work, including classes in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, English, mathematics, physics and behavioral or social sciences even though dentals schools don't typically require candidates to hold an undergraduate degree in a specific major. They also must take the Dental Admissions Test.

Resulting in either a doctor of Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Dental Medicine (DDM), most dental programs last 4 years. Dentists who wish to specialize in pediatrics should further complete a 24-month postgraduate residency program, according to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Courses in child psychology and child development is usually integrated in these programs, which generally result in a certificate or master's degree in pediatric dentistry. Anesthesia, dental cares, child orthodontics, child oral trauma, oral medication, sedation and infant oral health might also be covered in the specialised training. Observing and carrying out work with actual young patients, the biggest proportion of the pediatric dentistry resident's time is spent in medical environment.

Licensure in all 50 states within the United States of America is required in order to practice as a pediatric dentist. In order to get licensed as a dentist typically requires completion of graduation from an ADA-accredited school and successfully complete written as well as practical exams.
