Sacramento Dentistry May Be Able To Improve Your Teeth, Gums, and Bite

By Esme Spence

Because cosmetic dentistry has become a focus for many dental practices, including Sacramento Dentistry, in recent years, it is important to know what this area of dentistry includes. Cosmetic dentistry is any dental work that improves the general or overall appearances or a person's teeth, gums, and/or bite. The American Dental Association unfortunately does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a formal specialty area at this time; however, a cosmetic dentist Sacramento can provide a significant boost to a person's confidence, valuation of self-worth, and self-esteem regardless of recognition.

While cosmetic dentists are sought out for a number of reasons, primarily they are looked to in order to improve esthetics, and not necessarily function, of the teeth. Broken, crooked, or irregular teeth can all be corrected. Perhaps, a person has never felt confident about their smile. Or, it could even be something more serious in nature, such as correction for a bite that is off. There are numerous materials, procedures, and even credentials that are included in the broader scope of cosmetic Sacramento Dentistry.

The materials used in Sacramento Dentistry have changed over the years. At one time, dental fillings and other restorations were composed of gold, amalgam, and other metals. Dental work, now performed by a cosmetic dentist Sacramento, can be composed entirely of porcelain or other composite materials. Unlike silver fillings of the past, fillings are now entirely free of mercury. This generally results in safer, more natural looking fillings and teeth restorations, which is usually more desirable and esthetically pleasing.

Sacramento Dentistry professionals can perform an array of procedures. These procedures include whitening, tooth reshaping, bonding, dental bridges, veneers, gum lift, and bit reclamation. Whitening, referred to most commonly as "tooth bleaching", is a very common and sought after cosmetic procedure. While each of the above procedures focuses on curing different dental problems, they all work towards the goal of creating or restoring a beautiful, confident smile.

There are only two specialties to dentistry considered cosmetic in nature currently recognized by the American Dental Association. These two specialties are prosthodontics and orthodontics. In order to enter either of these specialties, after successful completion of a regular dental school program a dentist must undergo a minimum of 2 - 3 years full-time, rigorous education. Non-specialists technically include any dentist who works outside of these two distinctions. However, because credentials for cosmetic dentistry are very important, there is a governing body that regulates any dentist wanting to enter the field of cosmetic dentistry. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) has more than 7,000 members in the United States alone and additional members that participate from more than 70 other countries. Any certifications obtained by the AACD are not recognized by the American Dental Association, but do lend credibility to any dentist who has earned these certifications.

If you are considering utilizing a cosmetic dentist Sacramento to improve your teeth, gums or bite, perhaps schedule a consultation with Sacramento Dentistry.
