Are You A Candidate For Porcelain Veneers?

By Harry Izzo

It's no surprise that more and more people prefer dental treatment that looks natural. For example, a lot more people today prefer invisible braces over metal ones. The reason for this is that metal braces are uncomfortable and discourage you from smiling in public. Porcelain veneers also have this ability of making your mouth look more natural.

However, just like invisible braces, veneers are not for everyone. You will want to consult with your dentist in order to decide if this procedure fits your situation.

First of all, your teeth have to be healthy and if they are not they have to be fixed. The reason they have to be fixed is because veneers attach to the enamel of your teeth and if your teeth are unhealthy that gives the veneer very little to cling to.

If you have chipped or cracked teeth then porcelain veneers are best used on them. Smokers with stained teeth might find it better and cheaper to opt for veneers. The veneers hide all this staining that occurs from smoking. Veneers simply cover over the problem. The veneers also cover over broken or chipped teeth that are otherwise healthy. Because they are cosmetic in nature insurance does not cover the cost. So if you're the frugal type then you may want to reconsider.

Looked at another way, veneers last as much as 10 years before needing a replacement. For this reason, they are a good investment in the long run. The veneers attach to where the enamel should be. There is no going back once the procedure begins. Unlike invisible braces and dentures, they cannot be removed when the mood strikes you. The veneers come off only when it's time for their replacement.

If you have bad habits, veneers may not be for you. For example, if you are teeth grinder, one that grinds his sleep or likes to chew the ice in their soda, you will have to stop this. Veneers are thin shells and very sensitive to this kind of abuse. If you seriously want this procedure you are going to have to curb the habit.

If you're not someone who grinds his teeth then you should strongly consider going forward with the procedure. Make an appointment with a good cosmetic dentist and he'll improve your smile with them.
