Recommended Ways For Fixing Crooked Teeth

By Harry Izzo

There are many methods used for straightening teeth. Depending on the present alignment of your teeth, a procedure will be selected by your dentist. Here are a few options.

Braces -- there are two kinds. There are metal braces which most of us are familiar with and there are the recently developed invisible braces. Depending on how much of an adjustment is needed, metal braces can take several months. They cannot be removed any time you want. You must wait until your teeth are in the desired position. Invisible braces are removable and they look better while you are waiting for your teeth to be aligned. The only downside is that it costs more than metal braces.

Aligners fall somewhere in between invisible and metal braces. They form a wall on both sides of your teeth to straighten them. The front wall is invisible so no one knows you're wearing them. They are primarily used to straighten the front teeth. A number of patients have reported a certain discomfort in wearing them.

For chipped or unusually sharp teeth you can have your dentist install veneers. Veneers are small shells that are attached to the outside of your teeth and give them a nice shape. They cannot be removed because of this bonding, and they usually last only five to ten years.

Contouring is a good alternative to veneers. This is used also to give your chipped teeth a much better shape. Also teeth that are longer than your other teeth can be shortened to give you a more uniform smile.

Last but not least, you can use surgery to straighten your teeth. This procedure is very expensive and is primarily a treatment for a misaligned jaw. As a last resort, when none of the other treatments can be employed, surgery might be the one for you. Be prepared for the expense and the fact that you will probably have to wear braces when the surgery is completed. It takes a long time to get the results you want after surgery is done, so be prepared for that also.

Some people consider crooked teeth a distraction to one's looks, but others see it as part of your charm. It you want to straighten your teeth, there are so many options available to you. Just keep in mind the pros and cons of each one: the length of time each one takes and the money to get the work done.
