Pay Attention To Your Dental Health

By Adriana Noton

There is a lot you can tell about your body from the condition of your teeth and gums. A few signs of serious diseases are red, painful, and swollen gums. You can avoid these diseases by paying attention to your overall dental health.

You can get a good idea on whether you may be at risk for developing heart disease and diabetes from your gums. If your gums are red, inflamed, and swollen you may have a bacterial infection that can cause heart disease and diabetes. Bacteria can get into your bloodstream every time you swallow from your bad teeth and gums. This bacteria can cause an inflammation response from somewhere else in your body.

If you have diabetes then you know that it can reduce your ability to properly fight off infection. Do your best to keep your blood sugar levels regulated to lower your chances of gum disease and infection. Visit a dentist regularly because you are at a higher risk of problems.

Dry mouth, also called xerostomia, depletes the mouth of vital bacteria fighting saliva. Because of this there is a higher chance of getting cavities and gingivitis. A dry mouth is more susceptible to tooth decay and gingivitis. Many medications can cause dry mouth. Discuss any side effects of medications with your doctor prior to taking them.

Your oral health can be affected by your amount of stress you have in your life. You are less likely to pay attention to your teeth and gums when stressed out. High levels of cortisol are released throughout your body from stress. Cortisol is a hormone that can be bad for your body and teeth. Many people tend to clench their teeth and grind their jaw when stressed. Other activities of people who are stressed is drinking and smoking heavily. Alcohol and tobacco are bad for you and your mouth. Over time, nerves can be exposed in your teeth from all the teeth grinding and jaw clenching.

Children should learn at a young age how important good dental health is. You can start cleaning their teeth once the first tooth has cut through the gums. Only use water on kids under two years old. The first trip to the dentist should happen at about one year of age then continue yearly after that. Never allow a baby to go to sleep with a bottle in their mouth. Have kids eat less sugary foods and no candy. When children are old enough they can be taught to brush their own teeth and the importance of doing so everyday.

The habits of taking care of your teeth correctly as a child should last into your adult hood. Brushing should always be done a minimum of twice daily. Flossing should be done at least once per day. See a dentist regularly for check ups and cleaning.

Regular check ups and cleaning with your London Ontario dentist is key. Always remember to brush your teeth and floss daily. Check your gums regularly. They should be a healthy pink and firm to the touch.
