All-on-4 implants: an introduction

By Fergal Pollock

Losing teeth is never a nice experience. Whether it is by trauma to the face or from old age, it leaves you with a gap ridden smile, low confidence, and a diminished ability to chew your food. If you have most of your teeth missing, too, it can make your cheeks sag in and so make you appear older than you actually are. It is important, therefore, that some false teeth are put in place so that you can resume your life as normal.

It can be quite difficult knowing which option to go for with replacement teeth; there are so many options available. One clear option stands forth, however, if you are looking to replace all or most of your teeth: all-on-4 implants. This procedure lets you have a non-removable fixed arch of teeth fitted in one single operation. If you had any teeth left in your mouth that were decaying, they will also be removed to make way for pearly white replacements.

The all-on-4 procedure has lots of benefits. The fact that the teeth are fitted permanently is one. This means that you do not have to suffer all the inconveniencies that come along with removable teeth. Removable teeth are not only easily lost, but they can feel lose and uncomfortable in your mouth while you are doing things like chewing food. All-on-4 implants, however, allow you to have one simple procedure, and then get on with your life without having to worry about your teeth.

The operation relies on the dense bone found at the front of your jaw. The dentists drills out hollows into the bone, where the implants are securely placed inside, and through osseointegration the bone and implant fuse together. Effectively the implants become part of your jaw, making for a very secure set of teeth.

The false teeth are then just fitted onto the implants, and depending on what kind of teeth you are having fitted you can walk away on the same day with your set of teeth. There are kinds of false teeth that can take a little longer to sort out, but regardless, all-on-4 implants are still the quickest, and most secure solution to missing teeth.
