Intro to Cosmetic Dentistry

By Jaime Charlies

The art and science of dentistry has made advances such that one need not remain resigned to stained or chipped teeth. There are several cosmetic techniques available that allow one to correct dental anomalies that can impair appearance.

Orthodontics deals with the prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. Braces are used in orthodontics for the treatment of crooked teeth, protruding teeth, widely spaced teeth, an under bite, among other things. Even before braces are inserted into the patient, the chance of you having to deal with a painful procedure is likely.

For example, before braces, your orthodontist has to see whether you may need some teeth extracted. Teeth extraction, you know that is going to be uncomfortable. Another pre-braces procedure is spacers for braces , these are either rubber or metal, and are placed in between teeth that are too close together, and they can be very painful.

Once the braces are installed, you might be use to the pain, and thus they may only cause a certain level of discomfort. Metal braces made from titanium are expensive and need to be worn for 2-3 years.

So yes, they will be in your mouth for quite some time. Separating teeth is not an easy and quick fix. But non-invasive straightening braces cost less and require to be worn for a lesser period of time. Lingual braces are placed behind the teeth and are ideal for those who lay emphasis on cosmetic appeal.

The objective of cosmetic dentistry, which is elective dental work, is to improve the appearance of the teeth and to enhance one's smile. Cosmetic dentistry does not contribute to the health of the teeth, thus braces are rarely needed, they are usually just desired by those who wish to improve their smiles.

Cosmetic orthodontists are even trying to get you to look good while you have braces on, providing clients with braces color. This is done by having the ligatures of the braces have color. This is popular among teens and those who want their braces smile to stand out a little more.

A lot of people have a fear of going to the orthodontist, because there is almost always pain involved in the procedures used by an orthodontist. Beauty is pain some say. If you want those straight teeth, it will hurt. It is up to each individual to decide whether the pain is worth it.
