Why you should floss

By Holly P. Clark

Almost everyone pays a lot of attention to their dental hygiene by brushing at least once if not twice every day. This is done to make sure that teeth stay looking as white as possible; breath smells as fresh as possible but also to avoid the various dental health problems which can come as a result of poor dental hygiene. Although almost everyone brushes regularly and most people also mouthwash, there is still something which people should do but most however don't.

Flossing is equally important and so much so that dentists constantly tell their patients that they should be flossing just as regularly as they brush their teeth. If people absolutely don't have time to floss twice a day then they should be sure to at least do it once. There are a number of reasons why flossing is so important and most people would quickly start if they knew what it did for them.

The first reason for flossing is that it focuses on the areas where toothbrushes can't reach. Toothbrushes are getting better and better but they still don't get right between the teeth where the most plaque accumulates. This is the job of floss which gets right in between the teeth and removes the plaque not just away from the teeth but also away from the gums too.

Harmful bacteria are contained in the plaque and left over food which builds up between teeth and that is why it is so important for it to be removed. The bacteria are damaging to both the teeth and the gums and gradually strips the protective enamel from the surface of teeth. It also causes inflammation of the gums which is an early sign of gingivitis or gum disease.

There are different types of gum disease and while gingivitis might only cause inflammation of the gums, periodontitis can be much worse. This damages the bone which the teeth are held in place by and can cause the teeth to loosen and maybe even fall out. Flossing however can prevent all of this and that is why it is so important.
