Common Procedures of Cosmetic Dentistry

By Monica Michaels

Your smile is often the first thing that people notice about you. A healthy smile can make you appear youthful and vibrant, while a grey or yellowed smile can greatly age your face and make you seem older long before you should.

Your smile and youthful appearance can be enhanced with a cosmetic dentistry procedure. Most procedures are common and affordable for the budget conscious. Although there are numerous common dental problems, there is likely a cosmetic dental solution that can correct them.

There are several different methods to whiten teeth, and bleaching is the most common. This procedure can be done at home with provided supplies or with a simple visit to the dentist. Having a custom tray made to fit your mouth is the first step, and is performed in your dentist's office. Having a tray made to fit your mouth specifically allows for the best results.

While teeth bleaching kits can be purchased over the counter in stores, the mouth trays supplied in these kits are not as form-fitting as ones professionally made. Once the dentist makes a custom tray for your mouth, the procedure is as easy as following the given instructions. Surprisingly, teeth bleaching treatments are affordable and produce excellent results.

Veneers can help the problem of chipped, discoloured or crooked teeth and help you attain a beautiful, healthy smile. You can choose between porcelain or composite veneers. Depending on the type, more than one visit to the dentist may be required. Porcelain veneers have the added benefit of being significantly thinner than composites and may not require any buffering or teeth reduction prior to application.

The application of veneers typically starts by buffing or reducing the teeth which allow room in the mouth for the veneer's thickness. In some cases, the dentist might have to reduce the teeth by removing 1-2 mm off the tooth's surface area. Then a mold is created which can then be used to shape the veneers to your teeth. The patient is then given a temporary veneer that can be worn until the permanent veneer is completed. For the final application of the permanent veneer, chemicals are placed on the teeth, followed by an adhesive which holds the veneer in place. Then a light beam effectively hardens the adhesive which makes the veneer secure.

Aesthetic gum contouring helps reshape the gum tissue that surrounds your teeth and is a minimally invasive procedure. If you have an excessive amount of gum tissue or have gums that are uneven, this procedure can provide the solution. If you often see more gum tissue visible than teeth when you smile, this procedure may be right for you. Aesthetic gum contouring is also used to correct problems caused by poor dental hygiene such as deep gum pockets.

Aesthetic gum contouring requires the use of a local anesthetic which allows the patient to be awake, but not in pain. The gum tissue around the teeth is then trimmed and/or reshaped by laser. Getting information on cosmetic dental procedures is as easy as asking your dentist. From there, it's easy to start a process that can give you a beautiful, young-looking smile in no time.
