What A Patient Experiences During A Wisdom Tooth Surgery

By Carl Campbell

This article is a humble attempt to help people minimise if not completely eradicate their fear of this particular type of surgery surgery. We will tell you about the things you can expect to experience during your visit to a dental clinic for because 1, 2, 3 or 4 of your wisdom tooth or teeth needs to be surgically removed by the dentist. The expectations discussed here are just basic though and individual cases may significantly vary from one and the other.

If you are a candidate for wisdom tooth surgery but currently suffers from an infection, expect the dentist to postpone the procedure until the infection clears up. You may have to take antibiotics for your condition.

A dentist will administer either a local or general anaesthetic to a patient. The anaesthetic needs to take effect first before the procedure is started. A patient who received the local anaesthetic remains conscious throughout the procedure. He or she only feels numbness in the area surrounding the tooth or teeth to be operated. General anaesthetic is usually given to patients whose most if not all of their wisdom teeth require surgical removal performed at the same time.

Wisdom tooth surgery normally requires an incision in the gum, particularly the portion over the tooth in question. In addition, this kind of dental procedure, a dentist may need to remove some bone during the surgery. The gum initially cut open is stitched to facilitate the healing process.

If you were given general anaesthesia during the surgery, expect it to temporarily affect your coordination and reasoning skills. But even if you were only given a local anaesthesia, you should nevertheless avoid performing strenuous activities at least for a whole week following the surgical procedure. You surely don't want to disturb the blot clots which can actually help you reach a relatively fast recovery. Moreover, it is best to pass up on those drinking and smoking sessions so as not to delay the healing process. Finally, do not forget to practice good oral hygiene to save yourself from the risk of infection.
