How To Choose The Right Way To Whiten Teeth?

By Roseanne Picasso

People especially adults normally see their teeth changing color as they grow older. Tooth discoloration and staining can be attributed to different factors-from genetics to diet and lifestyle to certain medications. One common factor also is the changes that happen in the mineral structure of our teeth over time.

Thankfully, people can now easily find solutions for their stained or discolored teeth. Home remedies for teeth whitening are popular among those who prefer natural methods to whiten their teeth. On the other hand, some choose to take certain dental treatments to achieve their dream of having pearly white teeth.

Natural And Over-The-Counter Whitening Methods

Many people today particularly those who can't afford expensive dental treatments resort to natural methods for teeth whitening to reduce or avoid tooth staining. Using baking soda, a popular abrasive teeth whitener, is one example. Another is the use of malic acid-- a natural occurring acid in strawberries, lemons and other fruits. However, it's important to remember that both baking soda and malic acid are useful but not very gentle on the teeth, and that using them more than two times a week or so could lead to enamel damage.

There are also a variety of over-the-counter teeth whitening products available these days. You can purchase whitening kits, which are fairly more expensive than regular teeth whitening products, and apply them at home. However, it is advisable to visit your dentist before trying any whitening kit to ensure you choose the right one for you. Teeth whitening products can yield little or no results at all if you use them incorrectly or if your stained or discolored teeth require more extensive treatments. Cosmetic dentistry may be necessary to improve the appearance of a patient's teeth.

How To Achieve Whiter Teeth Faster

Using teeth whitening products does not only show that we care for teeth but we care for our oral health as well. However, many cases of tooth staining and discoloration can be actually prevented through healthier lifestyle choices. For instance, smoking and habitual drinking of tea, coffee, wine and other dark beverages are among the usual reasons for stained teeth. While it can be treated by bleaching and other teeth whitening procedures, it is still best to avoid these habits that can lead to tooth decay and staining.
