Taking Care Of Your Pearly Whites: Dental Care Tidbits

By Michal Bass

Much like your hair, your teeth are your source of pride. Apart from letting you process your food for proper digestion, it also earns pals for you and permits you to communicate better with others. This is why you have to make it your priority to take care of your pearly whites as much as any other part of your body.

Taking care of the teeth is relatively easy, but then not everyone does it as frequently and as excellently as required. This leads to poor dental health--cavities, bad breath, sore gums, and others. Aside from serious health matters, these dental concerns are also a big turn-off for other people. They may result in social isolation and a diminished self-confidence.

To take care of your teeth, you have to have the most vital factor: discipline. With regard to your eating habits, refrain from consuming food items that are known to negatively affect the quality of the teeth. Because smoking and drinking coffee are known causes of teeth discoloration, you need to quit smoking and reduce your coffee intake. Needless to say, you need to brush your teeth as frequently as you can everyday, preferably every after mealtime. Food items which get trapped in the middle of teeth and gums are the areas where germs thrive, causing toothache and bad breath.

Invest in good dental care too. Visit your trusted dentist a minimum of twice yearly for major check up and cleaning. This way you will find out if you need to fill up a certain tooth or get treatment for any tooth-related issue.

In brushing your teeth, do away with vigorous strokes to guard the sensitive gums and thus prevent soreness. Go for toothbrushes with soft bristles as opposed to the rather hard ones. Brush gently, carefully, and in a circular method. This would help clean gums and teeth properly without hurting the very sensitive parts. As an added care method, floss afterward to ensure no food is left in areas which are not easy to reach by a toothbrush. Floss gently and follow your teeth's contour instead of forcing the floss into each crevice, as this could hurt the gums in between, as well as create an unsightly gap between teeth.
