Teeth Whitening Trays - How Effective Are Teeth Whitening Kits?

By Sheena Easton

Most teeth whitening kits on sale in super markets and online come with teeth whitening trays. These trays perform an important task. When you put the teeth whitening gel on your teeth and leave it without anything to protect it, it will get washed away by your own saliva not giving the bleaching agent in gel a chance to work on your teeth.

It's easy to mold the trays to fit your teeth, and that will guard your gel application from being washed away by fluids in the mouth. Otherwise, the gel will dissolve and get washed off. If it stays in touch for longer, the whitening agent will work and in 30 minutes to an hour, do its work. Some kits even allow contact overnight.

Make sure you read all the instructions carefully. If you leave the tray on all night it might damage your enamel if the solution used in the kit is of higher strength. The prescription strength peroxide solution can eat through the enamel which is protective covering for your teeth. This will make your teeth weak and susceptible to bacterial infections and plaque build up.

Sometimes, after in-office dental cleaning your dentist will give you a few trays to take home to continue your treatment for touch ups. These trays will molded to your teeth's requirements. They will also give the bleaching liquid or gel to be used at home. Make sure to ask the dentist or the dental assistant about the time frame you can safely leave the tray on. Don't exceed this time limit.

Teeth whitening trays are on the whole even more effective than toothpaste or strips used in whitening. Trays can be applied once or twice a week and will start demonstrating dramatic effect in your smile. However they are a little more costly than other options, though they are cheaper than in office dental cleaning or laser teeth whitening by dentists.
