When Dental Implants Hurt

By Emma Anderson

Considering dental implants, they have been a part of restorative dental procedures for the past 40 years. Through the years, there has been a lot of progress for the dental profession considering all aspects of implants from implant materials to the longevity and the esthetic quality to the placement techniques. Used to make dental implants based on the original design from Sweden is ultra strong titanium that is made to look like large screws.

You can resort to dental implants if you have a single missing tooth, several missing teeth, or a whole arch of teeth that is missing. Bone growth is stimulated by implants other than stabilizing the restoration that sits on top of it. No longer receiving stimulation from the blood supply and activity of a tooth are the gums and bone where a missing tooth was attached to.

Other than this, since the opposing tooth on the opposite jaw no longer has something to bite against, it can grow towards the space created by the missing tooth. Surgery is needed to place the implants directly in the jawbone and under the gums. The surgical site with the implants is then left under the gums to allow the bone to grow around the implant and osseo integrate.

Taking these Swiss implants into consideration, it is possible to place a provisional can after the first surgery. Followed by healing time for the gums is the connection of an abutment or implant post to it. The final tooth restoration is custom fitted onto the abutment around 6 to 8 weeks afterwards. This is where the final restoration could be an implant supported denture, a crown, or a bridge.

A common assumption when it comes to implants is that they are painful as long as they are in. Should the implants not be properly placed, they could hurt. It is normal to experience discomfort after the surgery. No options were available before implants for people who did not have a strong bite on food namely those with dentures including people with several fabricated teeth to those with a full arch. Something that affects a person's nutrition and overall health is chewing.

It is easy for people to shy away from some foods when there is denture slippage, teeth are missing, or teeth do not meet each other. Something challenging is eating a balanced diet of only softer foods.

When it comes to natural teeth, a common misconception is that dentures are better to maintain. There are some people who associated replacing their real teeth with dentures to an easier time dealing with oral health care. There is some degree of discomfort associated with dentures. Because of several factors, over time the initial custom fit of dentures can loosen up. Unmatched by dentures alone is the stability as well as the solid foundation that dental implants create.

We live in such a great era of dentistry where people are able to benefit incredibly from technology in implant dentistry. People are allowed to eat healthier diets because implants offer bone and gum stimulation as well as restoration stability. When it comes to a healthy, natural tooth nothing can replace it but dental implants can be used by dental professionals to make their patients smile again.
