A dental assistant career is an attractive career move for people who are interested in working in the health industry without having to undergo lengthy and expensive university degree courses. There are dental assistant training courses available in most cities and regional centers that will equip you with the skills you need to work in a dentist's practice.

There are around 300 000 assistants working for dentists in the United States and it is an industry that is expected to grow in the next few years. That means that it is a vital and dynamic industry with healthy employment prospects for people undergoing training.

So what exactly does assistant do? Within a dental surgery, they perform a wide range of tasks. They meet and prepare patients for any procedures that they will be undergoing, they are responsible for the sterility of the medical equipment, they aid the dentist throughout oral procedures, teach patients about oral health, take x-rays, schedule appointments and meet with suppliers.

Secondly, you are able to find work in practically any location where you would care to live and thirdly, the salary that is attached to the career is respectable. Dentist's assistants regularly report high job satisfaction levels too.

In your training course you will be taught all the different skills that you will need in order to perform the job effectively.Some of the different areas that should be covered in any training course include: patient care throughout different stages of dental procedures and safety and hygiene aspects to maintain a hygienic dental surgery.

You will also be taught how to educate patients in the correct oral health care as well as managing the daily administration tasks of running a dentist's practice. Another important aspect of the job that every dentist's assistant needs to be able to handle is operating x-ray equipment and taking x-rays safely.

You can find dental assistant training courses all throughout the country, but before enrolling you should ensure that the course you are considering is an accredited one. You can verify this by contacting the American Dental Assistants Association or similar group. When you have completed the course you will be a certified assistant and be able to find employment in a dentist's practice and begin your career.
