Clear Braces versus Traditional Braces

By James Richards

Over the years, orthodontics has searched for new and improved ways of straightening patients' teeth. People look for braces that will fit their particular needs. Since 1999, invisalign braces have been one option for these patients.

Traditional braces work by attaching wires to teeth to align them. Clear aligners work differently, using trays instead. The dentist will use x-rays and teeth impressions in order to create customised trays. A tray is made for the top and bottom of the mouth, to be worn for approximately two weeks each. Patients typically wear these for a year or so, depending on the severity of the problem.

There are several benefits to using clear braces such as the invisalign system. A big advantage is the fact that others cannot easily see them. A person wearing these can conduct business and their clients will not notice them. They are not as noticeable as traditional braces. Another benefit is comfort. The smoothness of these will not irritate the inside cheeks.

Another advantage is obvious at mealtime. With traditional braces, the wearer has to be sure not to eat anything that will stick or pull at the wires. Trays are removed during meals, allowing the patient to eat without concern. When it's time to brush and floss, the wearer will be able to quickly complete the task. Traditional ones require working around each tooth, taking a bit longer.

Consumers often have the same financing options available to them for these braces as they do other types. Many insurance companies will often cover a portion of the costs. Patients can ask their dentists if they can finance the remaining balance.

Anyone considering these may want to keep these items in mind. They work best when they are worn for up to 22 hours a day. They are removable for eating and brushing teeth, and can remain in the mouth for all other activities, including sleeping. By cleaning them regularly, the chance of odour can be heavily reduced. Patients, who have questions, especially if they are concerned about any pain they may be feeling, can contact their dentist. The dentist will be able to answer concerns and check the fitting of the tray.

Clear braces have grown in popularity over the years. Adults and teenagers alike want to straighten their teeth without displaying wires every time they form a large smile. These braces give patients a choice with their orthodontic care.
