How To Become A Trained And Licensed Dentist

A licensed dentist is one who passes a licensing exam after 7-8 years of training in dentistry. They may be known as D. M. D., D. D. S., dental surgeons or orthodontists. Some specialize in different areas such as cosmetic or general. A supportive team of assistants, therapists, technicians, and hygienists work at their side.

A licensed orthodontist has many responsibilities. They use a variety of equipment. It is their job to do restorative dental treatments such as fixing crowns, bridges, and treating cavities. They also work with orthodontics doing braces and retainers to correct crooked teeth and other problems.

Some other responsibilities of a D. D. S. Include tooth removal, fitting dentures to a patients mouth, and root canals. They can prescribe medications, perform x-ray scans and use them to diagnose oral health issues. Anesthesia administration, implants, and oral surgeries can also be done if a dental surgeon has those qualifications.

Orthodontists usually work in office settings. Sometimes they will form partnerships and work under one business name. They also work in hospitals and for the government. You can find them in prisons, psychiatric facilities, and overseas treating soldiers. You may also find them training students at a school.

The first prerequisite needed to delve into this field are a high school diploma or a GED. Strengths in Math and Science are a plus. Upon high school graduation or the equivalent, a student will go on to complete three years minimum of college and get their undergraduate degree. Four years of dental school are required after college graduation. When the aspiring D. M. D. Graduates dental school they will take an exam to get licensed. A licensed orthodontist can complete an office residency or start up their own business right from the start.

A projected 16 percent job growth is expected through 2018. The percentage is higher than the national average for job growth. A DDS can expect a median pay of $119,405 yearly. A salary of $192,551 is rewarded to the highest paid in this field. Good pay gives an employee the opportunity to have more choices in life. A career as a dentist is a good investment in the future because it offers opportunity.
