Have a Promising Career by Enrolling in a Dental Assistant Training Program

By Rudy Hopkins

Today, a lot more people are deciding to enroll in dental assistant training programs. Dental assistants are professionals who provide dental care under the supervision of dentists. Some of the duties they perform are: cleaning and disinfecting dental equipment, assisting in dental exams, and cleaning the teeth of patients. They may also perform clerical duties such as answering the phone and scheduling exams.

There are many benefits of choosing this profession. For one, dental assistants enjoy a very flexible work schedule. Most have between 35- and 40-hour work weeks and have weekends off. Another one of the benefits of being a dental assistant is great pay. The average salary of dental assistants is roughly $32,000 annually, but a good number of them make more than $46,000 a year. Dental assistants are predicted to have bright job prospects. According to the Occupational Standard Handbook, this field is expected to grow by 36 percent from 2011-2018.

Compared to other medical professional training, the dental assistant training is not as extensive. In the majority of dental assistant training programs, a high school diploma or GED is required in order to qualify. Students who are still in high school should take courses in algebra, chemistry and biology to prepare for the rigors of a dental program. Those who would like a career in dental assisting have to be comfortable working with people.

Technical or community colleges usually offer dental assistant programs. These programs consist of a classroom and a clinical portion. Students are taught the basics of dental assisting in the classroom component, while they get to apply the skills they were taught in the clinical component of the program. Students can't graduate the program unless they have completed both components successfully.

Once students complete the program, they are awarded a certificate or a diploma. Those with experience in the dentistry field are able to complete on-the-job training. Some of these programs can be completed in as little as four to six months.

A good number of dental assistant training student go on to earn an associate degree. People with advanced education and training are qualified to become dental instructors and managers at dental offices. In addition, their job prospects are broader and they stand to earn a higher salary.

In the last few years, the enrollment in dental assistant training programs has gone up significantly. Some people have always wanted a career in the field of dentistry while others have decided to change careers. It doesn't matter what the reasons are, though. A rewarding career awaits those who complete a dental assistant training program.
