For this, they have to check the teeth and gums of their patient first. Once the hygienist is done cleaning a patient's teeth, he or she advises the patient on how to properly maintain the teeth to ensure oral health. During this whole process, the oral hygienist works in a highly safe and clean environment and uses various devices like gloves, surgical masks, and glasses to ensure their patient's safety and their own.

Though it is the dentist who performs the major procedures, the rest of the framework falls under the purview of an oral hygienist.
