By David Greene

It is not a secret that America is infatuated with beauty. Weight loss is big business, cosmetic surgery is extremely popular, and procedures in cosmetic dentistry have increased 300% in the past 5 years.

When an individual smiles, the 1st impression a meeting another individual can be dramatically improved. A white smile can enhance a person's self-confidence, self-esteem, and play a significant role in a business opportunity such as a job offering, closing a deal, and even the amount of salary on the table.

The survey was undertaken by Harris interactive and looked specifically of at individuals perceptions smiles and teeth bleaching. Approximately 90% of people agreed that a white sparkling smile makes an excellent 1st impression. The survey was sponsored by the same company that makes Sonicare Toothbrushes along with the Zoom Whitening Products.

55% of adults believe that an individual smile is the best physical indicator of a person's friendliness. Interestingly, 78% of adults in the survey agreed that an individual smile reveals a lot about his or her character. Over half of the people in the survey at 53% said if they could fix one thing about their smile it would be the whiteness of their teeth. This was more than any other cosmetic issue including teeth straightness.

Most adults at 57% do not believe that the teeth whitening products bought in a store are as effective as teeth whitening performed by a professional dentist.

Teeth bleaching done in a professional setting by a dentist will also have that doctor look at the other factors with the patient including any medical problems such as cardiac issues, with diabetes that may factor into doing what is right for that patient.

The materials that are utilized for teeth whitening are based on either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide tends to be a faster and stronger bleaching agent that is typically used in a professional setting whereas carbamide peroxide is what is commonly found in the at home or over-the-counter whitening products.

The bleaching agent with peroxide breaks down inside the mouth and absorbs into the individuals teeth due to the porosity. The peroxide attaches itself to the staining particles and it gets rid of them by breaking them apart. The teeth then appear whiter and brighter. In an office setting the dentist can also use a higher concentration of the bleach since they're able to protect the soft tissues of the mouth with a dental dam. They also may use ultraviolet light that can speed up the results and make them even better.

The risks of teeth bleaching and typically very low, but it is prudent to have a conversation with a dental professional prior to undergoing the bleaching to make sure it is safe for you and the outcomes can be maximized.
