California Dental Assistant Types

By Lilian Battista

If you are currently residing in California and you want to become a dental assistant or if you are a current dental assistant looking to expand your job duties, you should be familiar with the different types of dental assistants in California. There are different types of dental assistants due to their educational level and the amount the earn. You can be an unlicensed dental assistant, a registered dental assistant, or a dental assistant in extended functions or more. These different classifications are different based on their knowledge. Here's how they differ.

Basically an unlicensed dental assistant can only perform basic supportive dental procedures with the dentist watching over you. As an unlicensed dental assistant, you must maintain basic life support certification and be employed for 3 months or more and obtain a California Dental Board approved course in the California Dental Practice Act, and a California Dental Board approved course in dental control, and an AHA or ARC approved course in LBS which includes simulated clinical scenarios.

You can also become a Registered Dental Assistant, or RDA. To be an RDA in California, you must complete 15 months of work experience and complete a California board approved course in radiation safety and coronal polishing, and complete a CB approved courses in the California Dental practice and infection control and complete an AHA or ARC approved course in basic life support, and pass a state written and practical exam, law and ethics, and apply for a license as an RDA to the Dental Board of California.

You can also become a registered dental assistant in extended functions, or RDAEF if you are so inclined. You must first be a registered dental assistant, complete a California board approved course for application of pit and fissure sealants, complete a course in California Board approved extended functions program, and pass a state written or clinical exam, and apply to the board for a license.

As a California dental assistant, you could either be unlicensed, a registered dental assistant, or a registered dental assistant with extended functions. Just as long as you know the requirements and go through schooling and pass the exams with enough experience, you will be able to become a dental assistant.
