Dental Jobs The Opportunity For A Great Career

When choosing the field of dentistry for a career one is sure of work that is not only self satisfying but profitable as well. The reliability of dental jobs is apparent when one looks at the parking area of a dental clinic or tries to make an appointment. This steady stream of customers makes it an ideal choice for an excellent future.

There are numerous positions available in this popular field. They include hygienists, assistants, front office staff and lab technicians. Each of these positions requires various amounts of training and education.

One of the most important positions is that of a hygienist. This requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene. This is a full time program with some classes available online and on site training in the school's simulation lab. The length of time required for the course can vary between schools with some lasting only 32 months, having an average 7 semesters with 126 credits.

Dental assistants may be trained on the job but the majority are trained in special programs which take a year or less to complete. Their work includes such things as taking care of instruments and equipment, preparing patients for treatment and caring for their office records. During the treatment procedure, the assistant works alongside the dentist and under his direction. They may also have lab and other duties.

The position of certified dental assistant can be obtained with the same training as regular assistant except that certified is obtained by meeting certain criteria and passing a special exam. With this certification, they are allowed to polish and place sealants on teeth along with their other duties. A special permit is required to take x-rays. People choosing this career either attend a two-year college or enroll in a certified assistant program.

Many people enjoy a career as a laboratory technician. They have no contact with a patient but work with a team in a laboratory setting. Their job is to assist in making full or partial dentures as well as creating veneers and crowns. These procedures are done from mouth molds sent by the dentist. This job requires one year of college studies that results in certification.

A receptionist is one of the most important dental jobs on the site. Strong processing skills, a knowledge of office procedures, accounting and related procedures are required. Dental office procedure classes, combined with previous experience in this area make it an ideal job. This field offers a world of opportunities. For example, a hygienist has a choice to work in a clinic, in education, research, or management among other things. Regardless of the chosen position it is an ideal career choice.
