How to Bleach Dental Crowns and Laminates

By Katherina Rodriguez

It is not at all unusual for a person to have to get either a crown or laminate put on at least one of their teeth during their lifetime. The reason for having the crown or laminate attached can be triggered by a variety of factors that can include things from a chipped tooth to enamel erosion and even discoloration. One of the things that many people want to know when they get the crown or laminate attached to their existing tooth is whether or not they can have their teeth bleached to optimize the coloring and eliminate stains.

The practice of getting the teeth bleached is becoming increasingly common. In the past the bleaching was done by individuals who specialized in cosmetic dentistry, however since the bleaching is a good way for an office to earn additional revenue more and more family dental practitioner have started to add teeth bleaching to the list of services they provide. This is actually a good thing. The dental practitioner will have a better idea of the pros and cons of getting the bleaching done and will also be able to properly advise the patient about the way that the bleaching will affect any existing dental work.

Since the crowns and laminates are made out of porcelain it is not possible to bleach the crown and laminates themselves. However there is not technical reason why the person cannot still bleach their teeth which are not covered by crowns or laminates. In fact, bleaching the teeth is a good way to make sure that the crown and real teeth are the exact same shade of white. Technically there is also no reason why a person cannot bleach their laminates, but dental practitioners do not recommend it.

If the person is only getting one crown, they may want to bleach their teeth so that everything matches. However if the procedure that they have opted for is laminates, there should never be a reason for the patient to need to bleach them. The whole purpose of the laminates is to hide the person's actual teeth and create the illusion that they have a perfect smile. Since the laminates are designed to be stain resistant, the person's teeth bleaching days should be over.

Improvements are always being made and now a patient can expect to get as much as ten years' worth of use out of their dental veneers. The catch is that they have to take care of them. The better cared for the veneers are, the longer they are going to last. Just because the veneers are made out of porcelain does not mean that the patient does not have to brush or floss. Not only will this prevent the veneers from getting pitted or breaking, but it will also ensure that the patient's breath smells as fresh as it possibly can. The person should also make sure that they regularly go to their dental practitioner who will not only make sure that the person is still in good oral health, but will also make sure that the veneers are in good shape. When the patient takes care of their veneers they will be able to smile with confidence.
