By Henry Crouch

There has been a continuing shortage of dental assistants over a period of last10 years or so. It was estimated to about 266,000 in 2002. Most dental assistants work with dentists. The others work with physicians and in hospitals and educational institutions.

A third of were working on part time basis and employed number of offices. The total figure, one can expect to reach 362,000 in the year2016. Can anybody say there is no demand for dental assistants?

A dental assistant works for easing the pressure by taking on all the routine work allowing the dentist to concentrate on his main job of treating patients. Routine duties such as maintenance of dental record, looking after patients and laboratory work are all taken up by the dental assistant.

In addition, a dental assistant will fix up and confirm appointments, and receive patients. It is a job to keep the dentist office stocked with dental supplies and other materials. He sends bills to patients, receives payments and maintains records.

The environment of the working place is well lighted and clean. The DA has to work close to the dentist, arranging instruments and other things and also passing them on to the dentist when asked by him. Working hours are like that of an office job that may be range between 35 to 40 hours per week. However, depending on the pressure of work some may be required to work in the evenings perhaps even on Saturday.

A dental assistant course takes about a year to complete. The actual learning process comes only through experience after starting on a job.

A dental assistant, on an average gets a salary of about $30, 220 annually. New jobs are about 13000 per year. Average hourly wages for most dental assistants vary between $10.35 and $16.20. The minimum hourly wage is about $8.45 and maximum nearly $19.41.

All DAs get dental coverage and some get even paid vacation.
